Cate has a brother and a sister. They were raised by their mother, as their father died when Cate was only ten years old. Cate attended the University of Melbourne for a time, but decided she could get a better education from traveling the world. When she left England and traveled to Egypt, Cate took a part as an extra in an Arabic film. Her future in the entertainment industry began then and there. After traveling, she returned to Melbourne and enrolled at the National Institute for Dramatic Arts. Cate's career began on the theater stage, where she was nominated for awards. After the theater, Cate starred in several Australian television movies. Cate is married to Andrew Upton, whom she met while shooting one of her television movies. Cate's big break in Hollywood came with her role as Queen Elizabeth in the movie, 'Elizabeth.' Cate was an Oscar nominee for Best Actress. On Valentine's Day, 1999, Cate joined actresses Melanie Griffith, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore and Gillian Anderson for a one-time benefit performance of 'The Vagina Monologues' on the Old Vic Theatre stage. Cate is very active with charitable causes for children's and women's issues!
